The independent Scale-Up Report on UK Economic Growth 2014 identified a number of key barriers that businesses must conquer if they are going to achieve their growth ambitions.

While hi-growth SMEs generate 20% of all jobs growth in the UK, recent evidence from OECD shows that the UK has the lowest proportion of hi-growth SMEs: the biggest problem for the UK is not in starting companies, but in growing them.

Together with WLEP, Worcestershire Business Central and Scale Up Institute, the University of Worcester will deliver a series of one day events that will help you as a business overcome these barriers.

incrementum is Worcestershire’s business scale up programme

The programme has been designed using the latest academic business growth thinking and will be delivered by world-class international and national experts in entrepreneurial learning. For those small business leaders selected to participate, the core of the programme is a high quality, practically-focused business and management education, delivered over 100 hours through a blend of online and in-person residential sessions.

  • Six one day sessions with a group of 20 like minded entrepreneurs

  • Sector Dynamics Sessions with smaller groups

The programme is designed to cover some of the common issues which surround a business when trying to grow. Each session is developed over one day with pre and post session material available on the University of Worcester’s virtual learning environment (VLE).  During the programme every delegate develops a customised business Growth Plan to direct their organisation’s  strategy and expansion. The success of the incrementum is contributed to the right balance of formal learning, mentoring, and peer-to-peer support.

 


incrementum Application Process

1, Attend the free information session on Saturday 11th February 2017.

2, The following eligibility criteria apply:

  • Have an ambition to grow their business
  • The applicant must be the primary owner / co-owner of the business, or the most senior decision-maker if the business is not limited by shares
  • The business must have been operating for at least two years and will generally have between five and 50 employees
  • The business should have an annual turnover of at least £100,000
  • Social enterprise applicants must be commercially operated businesses that achieve their social purpose through trading rather than grant funding
  • The business must be scalable and capable of generating additional local employment

3, Must be available (10am til 2.45pm) on the following key dates:

The first element in growing a business is growing the Entrepreneur. In this session will develop a greater understanding of:

Market Insight

The complexity of developing new market share through innovation is through an in-depth understanding of the customer, the market and the industry. In this session we work on the business’s capability to:

  • Options for growth – Innovation through to new markets

Growth Strategies

Strong strategic planning and direction ensures a business is focused on growth. In this session we develop an understand of the core elements of a growth strategy.

  • IP & barriers to entry

  • Staff and Resources planning

Accelerated Sales

The management and process of selling should be understood by every member of the business and using technology to increase the efficiency should be explored.

  • Product portfolio, sales cycle and customer value analysis

Scale and complexity

A larger business should not mean a more complex one and through the design of the business the complexity should be minimised.

  • Operational design

Finance for growth

The development and presentation of the finances of the business enable it to gain support from additional stakeholders, e.g. Banks, Investors, Suppliers. In this session we develop skills and techniques to create:

What will I learn on the programme?

The programme provides you with an opportunity to review and improve all aspects of your business within a supportive, peer-led environment. Throughout the programme, you will work closely with a Growth Expert who will advise you as you create your own personalised Business Growth Plan. The online and face-to-face modules are taught by a diverse range of entrepreneurship experts.

What sort of businesses participate in the programme?

The programme is open to businesses from all sectors.

How much does it cost?

£350

Who runs the programme?

The programme is run by the University of Worcester in partnership with Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (WLEP), Worcestershire Business Central (WBC) and Scale Up Institute.

Can my co-director/COO/CFO apply?

We can only accept one leader per business onto the programme. This would typically be the majority shareholder of the company or the most senior decision-maker. In cases where directors have an equal partnership, applicants should decide who from their business would be most suitable to participate in the programme.

I can not make all dates?

You will need to be available for all of the dates of the sessions, for the full duration of those days.

What happens when I submit my application?

After the application is submitted, it will be reviewed by a selection panel. You should usually expect to hear whether your application has been successfully shortlisted within 2-3 weeks of the submitting it. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview at Worcester Business School.

Dr David Bozward, Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship,  Entrepreneurship Lead

David is a serial technology entrepreneur, educator, mentor and authority on international youth entrepreneurship and education with over 20 years entrepreneurial business experience. Through national campaigns, he has developed a network of student led Enterprise Societies, which covers over 200 UK education institutions with a membership of over 40,000 students. He has also worked with students in over 114 institutions, providing unique consultancy on extra-curricular enterprise skills development.

Matt Draycott,

Matt is a lecturer and entrepreneur whose twin passions of business and education led to him becoming a specialist in helping people to create, grow and improve their ventures. This unique combination of practitioner and educator distinguishes Matt from others in his field and, over a decade since he built his first business his achievements speak for themselves: thousands of successful students and mentees, national awards, multiple directorships, an internationally lauded e-learning platform and publications in both the academic press and the mainstream media.

Dr John Park,

Technology business strategy is what I live and breathe. As a senior R&D executive with the Procter & Gamble and PepsiCo International corporations I built three world class organisations transforming technology into multi million $ business opportunities. My biggest success was converting my PhD science into a globally patented stain removal technology for Ariel Future, a brand with sales of £500MM/yr. As a serial technology entrepreneur and award winning academic my current focus is on using digital technology to coach nascent technology entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs how to build a technology business opportunity.

 

Stuart Allen,

Sales revenue is the ‘life blood’ of business and without it growth becomes impossible. I work with B2B clients of all sizes to help them exceed their sales revenue & margin targets, through the most appropriate mix of sales consultancy, sales training & sales performance coaching. I am best described as a sales person that teaches rather than a teacher of sales people! I use my extensive 30 year experience of front line sales and sales management, as well as launching and building a number of business, to explain the ‘why?’ and not just teach the ‘how?’.

Alan spent 19 years in manufacturing with LGG Charlesworth Ltd, an organisation recognised nationally for its approach to management style and culture. Alan worked with the UK government to forge and implement the National and International Innovation Best Practice agenda and was instrumental in the design of the Business Performance Diagnostic, a benchmarking tool used by over 7000 businesses and delivered through Business Link.
